January 2005

Our two-year-old effort to trap wild pheasants from South Dakota to reintroduce into southwestern Pennsylvania is moving along. The South Dakota biologists have started baiting the birds. Now we need some bad weather to move in so the traps can be set. At that time, the crews from our Partners Program will travel to South Dakota to pick up the birds. We will be radio-collaring 30 birds (25 hens and 5 cockbirds) and banding all birds. This will be the first batch of a three-year trapping effort. The birds will be released in habitat that we have been establishing since 1996.

March 2005

We completed a second successful transfer of wild pheasants from South Dakota into southwestern Pennsylvania. Birds are being monitored and are found to be moving around well within their new habitat.

July--September 2005

Pheasants were observed on a regular basis throughout the summer with broods; and continue to be seen in nice-sized groups in the fields through September.
